Business Processes

Despite the recent rise in interest in Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), decisions to outsource business processes as well as IT go back many years.

Since the turn of the millennium however, BPO has emerged from ITOs shadow to the extent that it is estimated to account for anywhere up to 33% of the total outsourcing market.

BPO has evolved from manual processes such as security, delivery and catering, through to assistance functions such as recruitment, professional financial services and IT-intensive processes such as large-scale logistics, document management and custodial services.

Today, BPO has advanced further to include complex areas such as Finance and Accounting (FAO), Human Resources (HRO) and Procurement (PO).

This evolution is certainly a feature of increasing technological and service provider sophistication; but it is also a reflection that, as vertical markets have developed, many functions traditionally viewed as core processes have evolved into ready candidates for BPO. A good example of this is the Pharmaceutical industry, where testing and field trials, data-entry and patient analysis functions had traditionally been viewed as core business but nowadays you would be hard-pressed to find a multi-national player who doesn’t outsource at least some, if not all of these functions to a thriving secondary market, increasingly offshore to fully exploit the cost-saving potential of emerging markets.
